Sensors are a vital part of any engine management or data acquisition system; they are the devices that provide raw data to quantify how the vehicle is performing.

A sensor turns a physical measurement into an electrical signal that can be read by the ECU or data logging system. Some sensors can be wired directly to an ECU or data acquisition system, others produce a very small value that first needs to be amplified.

Sensors come in many shapes and sizes and it is possible to find one to measure just about anything that happens in a vehicle, whether it is as simple as a temperature measurement or something more complicated like yaw rate.
